What will be covered in the webinar?
The webinar covers Plastic Tax and EPR in more detail. It also shows how Greenifi can take care of the entire Green Tax process for sellers. Greenifi uses its specialist knowledge and local partnerships, so you can meet your obligations with minimal disruption.
We’ll take a closer look at Spain’s Plastic Tax, which came into effect in January, 2023. It is a tax on non-reusable plastic packaging waste. Its goal is to get businesses to switch to more sustainable packaging. It also aims to cut the plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans.
The webinar also covers France and Germany's Extended Producer Responsibility rules, which have been law since 2022. These rules make the producer, not the consumer, responsible for managing a product's end of life. This means businesses must make sure their products are recyclable and properly disposed of.
Who is the webinar for?
The webinar is for anyone who makes, sells, or imports goods into France, Germany, or Spain. It is useful even if the Plastic Tax and EPR rules don’t apply to your business yet. Whether you’re an Amazon seller or run a large company, Greenifi has the expertise to get you Green Tax compliant with minimal hassle.
A question and answer session closes the webinar. You can clear up any doubts about Green Tax rules and learn how Greenifi can help you and your business.
What is Spain's plastic packaging tax?
It is a special tax on non-reusable plastic packaging, in force since 1 January 2023. It is charged on the kilograms of non-recycled plastic in the packaging.
According to the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT), the taxpayers are businesses that manufacture, import or make intra-community acquisitions of this packaging. Sellers who bring plastic packaging into Spain from another EU country can therefore fall within scope. The tax was introduced by Law 7/2022 of 8 April.
What do EPR rules require from sellers?
Extended producer responsibility (EPR) makes producers finance the collection and recycling of the packaging they put on the market. In practice, sellers must register, join a scheme and report volumes.
- Germany: producers of packaging must register with the LUCID Packaging Register and join a system that finances recycling. Shipping packaging is always included.
- Sellers based abroad: companies not established in Germany must appoint an authorised representative for their EPR duties there.
- Marketplaces: online platforms must check a seller's LUCID registration. Without it, products may not be offered on the platform.
- EU-wide: the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 entered into force on 11 February 2025 and has generally applied since 12 August 2026.
What is the EU plastic own resource?
It is a contribution that EU Member States pay to the EU budget, based on their non-recycled plastic packaging waste. It has applied since 1 January 2021.
According to the European Commission, a uniform call rate of €0.80 per kilogram applies to the weight of plastic packaging waste that is not recycled. Member States pay monthly, based on forecasts. The amounts are adjusted once final data is available.
A mechanism also avoids excessive contributions from less wealthy Member States.
The own resource is paid by Member States themselves. It is separate from national measures such as Spain's plastic packaging tax, which is charged on businesses that manufacture, import or acquire the packaging. For sellers, the day-to-day duties still come from national rules: plastic taxes, EPR registration and packaging reporting.
Greenifi is now part of Taxually as EcoTax. The EcoTax service handles EPR registration and reporting in Germany, France and Spain, as well as Spain's plastic tax.
How Taxually handles this
Taxually’s EcoTax registers you with the right EPR schemes in Germany, France and Spain, provides the registration numbers marketplaces such as Amazon ask for, and handles the periodic volume reports and payments to producer responsibility organisations, including the Spanish plastic packaging tax.
